{"id":180,"date":"2007-02-27T12:40:07","date_gmt":"2007-02-27T12:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/west-penwith.org.uk\/blog\/archives\/180"},"modified":"2014-04-17T11:00:41","modified_gmt":"2014-04-17T10:00:41","slug":"are-you-a-british-citizen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/west-penwith.org.uk\/blog\/archives\/180","title":{"rendered":"Are you a British Citizen?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The question of citizenship has come up again because the heir apparent has said that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/6399457.stm\">new immigrants should do community service<\/a> as well as pass a test.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk\/htmlsite\/index.html\">test<\/a> is 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple choice questions and you have to achieve a score of 75%. Indirectly it also tests whether you can use a computer. It is actually much more a test of comprehension&mdash;have you read and understood the book&mdash;than knowledge, but in that respect I suppose it means that the candidates must have a good grasp of English (or Welsh or Gaelic).<\/p>\n<p>The cost is \u00a310 for the book and \u00a334 for each attempt at the test. Most of the practice tests cost money, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.workpermit.com\/uk\/naturalisation\/life_in_the_uk\/quiz.htm\">this is one of the few that doesn&#8217;t<\/a>. Try it for yourself, this is how well I did.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>%age of population under 19&mdash;no idea but can make a sensible guess.\n<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s vote&mdash;OK, I know that one.\n<\/li>\n<li>Causes of crime&mdash;again a sensible guess.\n<\/li>\n<li>Population&mdash;a sensible guess (that is the problem with multiple choice questions)\n<\/li>\n<li>Largest ethnic minority&mdash;I got this wrong.\n<\/li>\n<li>Census&mdash;well I ought to know this one having worked with it for a number of years.\n<\/li>\n<li>Religion&mdash;I got this wrong as well.\n<\/li>\n<li>Width of country&mdash;guess again but why expect them to learn obsolete units of measurement.\n<\/li>\n<li>Language&mdash;I would dispute &#8220;widely spoken&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>Sport&mdash;not surprisingly I got this wrong.\n<\/li>\n<li>Bank holidays&mdash;I forgot to count May Day.\n<\/li>\n<li>Easter Eggs&mdash;I have no idea and I don&#8217;t suppose many other people do either.\n<\/li>\n<li>Boxing Day&mdash;I know that, but celebrated is an exaggeration.\n<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister&mdash;I got the answer right but technically it is wrong.\n<\/li>\n<li>Cabinet&mdash;I got this wrong.\n<\/li>\n<li>Lords&mdash;A good guess again.\n<\/li>\n<li>Queen&mdash;OK but again a technicality likely to trip up a foreigner.\n<\/li>\n<li>EU foundation&mdash;ignoring the spelling mistake, I have no idea. A random guess.\n<\/li>\n<li>EU size&mdash;I know that.\n<\/li>\n<li>Age for public office&mdash;I got this wrong.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The site failed to add up my score but I got 12\/20 = 60%.
