LUDGVAN is a township and parish, 3 miles north-east from Penzance, 1 from Marazion railway station on the West Cornwall railway, in Penwith Hundred, Penzance Union, Penwith deanery, Cornwall archdeaconry, and Exeter bishopric, West Cornwall; it is situated on the hill side facing Mount’s Bay. The church is an old stone building, having a porch with Norman arch, and, square embattled tower containing 5 bells: in the interior are nave, three aisles, chancel, several mural monuments, font and register. The living is a rectory, worth £800 yearly, with residence and 23 acres of glebe land, in the gift Lord Bolton; the Rev. Archibald Paris, M.A., is the incumbent. There are six chapels for Wesleyans, one for Bible Christians, and two for Primitive Methodists; also a National School for boys and girls, and a Sunday school, held at the National school room. A fair is held on the 2nd of October, yearly, at Lower Quarter, for cattle. The population, in 1851, was 3,529, and the acreage is 4,544a. 0r 33p. The subsoil is killas. The Rev. Canon Rogers is lord of the manor, and, with, the Duke of Leeds and the Duke of Cleveland, chief landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, and potatoes. There are charities of £6 yearly value.
