I present here gleanings from their transactions [Penzance 1880–99] some of which I have obtained in bound volumes. I would welcome any further information.
A chronology of the society is as follows:—
- 20 Nov 1839—The society was founded by the Mayor of Penzance, Richard Moyle, in response to a petition drawn up at a meeting held on the 4th of that month by 69 people.
- 12 Sep 1845—The first report is published
- 1855—The last Transactions in this run published and the Society lay dormant due to lack of members.
- 1862—The society was revived and publications resumed.
- 1865—Publication of the transactions ceased again but the annual excursions continued.
- 1872—The Society became dormant again, probably due to considerable debt incurred when moving to new premises.
- 26 Apr 1880—The society was revived again by public subscription and grant.
Members 1880–92
This is a list of members gleaned from the section at the front of each of the annual “Transactions”. It is presumed that these are correct, though my copy of volume III has considerable ms. alterations.
