Sally Knowles
Researching: Crysede silks in Newlyn and St. Ives.
I am looking for any photographs or samples of work produced by Crysede in the 1920s and 30s. Also anyone who remembers the works, had relatives who worked there or remembers its reputation. Also any details of the key characters. All input is important.
Crysede was set up in Newlyn in 1920 by Alec Walker and his wife Kay (Kathleen) Earle. They produced brightly coloured printed silks based on Walker's avant garde abstract paintings. In 1925 Tom Heron joined the company and moved the Crysede works to new premises in St Ives. After several years of success and critical acclaim in the media—locally, nationally and internationally—the company went in to voluntary liquidation in 1938, after which it was taken over by Cresta, a rival silk company set up by Tom Heron. Cresta itself was later taken over by Debenhams. -

Neither name is now found in Cornwall or the UK, however a very few PERMEWANs remain in Australia and a few TREMEWENs in Australia, Canada and the USA.
