Botallack

In the parish of St. Just in Penwith,situate 7 miles from Penzance [Picture], which is the nearest railway station and shipping place. The mine is held under lease of 21 years, granted by Viscount Falmouth, at a Royalty of 1-24th on tin. There have been 12 shafts sunk Boscawen which is the principal working shaft, is sunk 250 fathoms, and levels extend from it under the sea for about 500 fathoms. A skip, running on rails at an angle of 32.5 degrees, is used for conveying miners and visitors down this shaft,and many distinguished persons have visited it, among others , their R.H. the Prince and Princess of Wales. The mine is drained and worked by 14 steam engines(pumping, stamping, and drawing). The average produce profits divided by the present company, since its establishment in 1836, have been about, £120,000. The company is on the costbook system, and consists of 200 shares.

Carn Galver

tin mine, Zennor is on the border of the parish of Zennor, adjoining Morvah, 3 miles from Zennor churchtown, and 6 miles from Penzance, which is the nearest shipping place and Railway station. It is held under a lease of 21 years from 1871, granted by messrs. R. DODD and CORNISH, and pays dues of 1-20th. The adit is 70 fathoms below the surface, and the shaft is sunk 130 fathoms. The ore is crushed by a compound steam engine, which is fitted with two pneumatic stamps, and which will do the work of 16 of the ordinary kind in use. There is a considerable accumulation of water, which is being pumped out by steam power. Since May 1871, about 15 tons of ore have been procured, and it is calculated that when the water is reduced that from 12-15 tons of ore will be raised per month. At present about 70 hands are engaged in the various processes. The Company Limited is in 10,000 shares of £1 per share.

Ding Dong

tin mine is situated 3 miles from Gulval Church Town, in the mining district of Gulval and 4 miles from Penzance, which is the nearest shipping place and railway station. It is supposed to have been working continuously for a longer period than any other mine in the county. The company is on the cost-book system, in 656 shares, the majority of which have been held by the BOLITHO family for upwards of 120 years; it pays dues of 1-24th the "bound owners" receiving 7-12ths of the 24th. The greatest depth is 135 fathoms below the adit ( which is 20 fathoms below the surface) but the levels being chiefly worked are from 50-80 fathoms below the adit. There are 2 pumping, 1 stamping, and 2 drawing engines, all of which are worked by steam power and there are about 230 hands constantly employed. The mine is still very prosperous, and promised to continue so.

The mine is held under a lease for 21 years from the year 1871. The country is granite and greenstone. Depth of Engine Shaft 200 fathoms. The known lodes on the sett are very numerous, some running east and west, and a few north and south. The machinery consists of one steam engine for pumping, one for stamping, and one for winding. The mine is drained by steam power. The minerals found in this sett include tin and copper. This mine was originally opened more than 200 years since. The mines are worked by five steam engines of 45-inch and 30-inch, 20-inch, 20-inch and 12-inch cylinders.

It employs altogether about 350 hands, and it is estimated that it has produced no less than £1,000,000 worth of ore since it was opened.

There is a very powerful steam pumping engine, tow steam drawing, and one stamping engine, and many wheels are driven by water power. The adit is 20 fathoms below the surface, and the depth of the deepest shaft is 200 fathoms. The workings extend for many miles in all directions. The company is on the costbook system, and consists of 940 shares of about £15 per share.

Wheal Owles

tin mine is in the parish of St. Just in Penwith, situate 1 mile from St. Just and 7 from Penzance [Picture], which is the nearest railway station and shipping place. The mine is held under lease of 21 years, granted by John W. SCOBELL esq., and others at a royalty of 1-25th on tin and 1-20th on copper. There have been twenty-five shafts sunk. The mine has eleven steam engines; 3.5 miles of adit, which is 300 feet above the level of the sea; 1020 fathoms of engine rods; 544 fathoms of surface rods; 820 fathoms of pit work; and 3,288 fathoms of tram roads. The shafts, winzes and levels are 33 miles, 150 fathoms, 2 feet 9 inches in length. Three or four of the principal shafts are 190 fathoms deep. There has been an outlay on this mine, within the last three years of £10,000, in sinking two diagonal shafts under the sea and near the junction of the killas and granite, but here has been no return yet though it is expected to prove very remunerative indeed. The company is on the costbook system, and consists of 80 shares.
