Wesleyan Chapel, Chapel Street
This was founded in 1700 and moved to the new chapel in 1813/14 where there were 1318 seats. In 1851 Richard Hosking was steward. The collonade on the front was a much later addition (c1860?)
1814—Wesleyan Chapel built. Enlarged 1864 [Saundry 1931]. The 1873 survey reports 1533 seats.
N.B. Chapel Street is not named after this chapel, nor St. Mary’s, but St. Anthony’s Chapel which was once here.
-
Lanyon Chapel, Abbey Street (Methodist New Connexion)
Little is known of this except that it was built in the garden of the brick house in Chapel Street next to Abbey Street, the property of Rev. Thomas Vyvyan. There was also a National School built in the same garden and Pat Banks recalls that this was in use by West Cornwall School before they moved to St. Clare’s. They used the main chapel room as a gymnasium. After that it was used as a Youth Centre.

-
Queen Street Chapel (Wesleyan/Baptist)
The first two meeting houses in Penzance are uncertain. The most likely first location was the bottom of Jennings Lane (near Abbey Slip). The second was probably on St. Mary’s Terrace, off Morrab Gardens, which was licenced in 1779 and mentioned by Wesley in 1780. A meeting house was registered for worship in Queen Street in 1790 but may have been in use in 1789 when Wesley last visited Penzance. After being vacated by the Methodists in about 1834, it was used for a short while by the Baptists (possibly those from Jordan Chapel before the one in Clarence Street was built). From 1883 is was used as Coulson’s flour stores but Pat Banks recalls it being used by the Salvation Army more recently.
In 1851 there is recorded the Queen Street Wesleyan Association which had seats for 500 and in 1851 W. H. Rodd was steward. This is probably the same building used, perhaps, for an overflow congregation. It is not mentioned in the 1873 survey.

Richmond Chapel, Tolver Place (Wesleyan)
Pat Banks says—“It was built on the old Richmond Estate and the house was the Manse at one time. I would say it was the youngest of all the Methodist Chapels, starting in the old Scouts Hall in St.Clare Street next to West Cornwall Hospital according to my mother. According to my grandmother's obituary (she died in 1937) the chapel was built ‘nearly 30 years ago.’ It's a tall and fairly wide building which, unlike other chapels in the district, does not have a gallery. The choir area is more in the style of the Anglican Church with the choir stalls facing each other in the chancel. There used to be a huge cross on the roof at the Eastern end but this came down one night in a big storm and now sits on the ground between the chapel and the fence.”
