The 2000+ Renault Laguna (the one with no keyholes) has a few quirks which are not in the owners manual (if we still had it). These are based on experience and may be mistaken but also may also apply to other cars, especially other Renault models.
- When the card key battery runs low it fails to operate the door mechanism. Changing the battery appears not to make any difference but the problem is that it has lost the code. Get into the car using the other key then use the faulty key (with a new battery) to start the car. This re-instates the code.
- If the dashboard goes haywire e.g. all lights stuck on, then it can be reset/tested by removing the card key; hold down the trip computer button on the end of the stick and while it is pressed, put the key back in. This will then reset the computer and go through a test sequence. Remove the key to stop it.
- The tyre pressure warning system is sensitive to the cold, especially sub zero temperatures. The symptoms are that all four tyres show flat and the warning light flashes. This will clear itself after about a half mile when the tyres warm up. I had it fixed once under warantee (no idea what they did) but it still does it most winters.
- A poor contact in the electric sunroof switch can cause it to open at unexpected times. The switch is expensive (c£100) so disconnect it by pulling out the plug (the switch panel just pops off). Fortunately the default position for the roof is closed.
Hiya,
Great site, thanks alot! I have a problem, it has been refered to in post but I couldn’t see the answer anywhere. I have a Renault Laguna 53 Plate 1.9Dci Dynamic Techno with turn by turn monchrome sat nav. I left the lights on, and the battery went flat. Recharged it, and entered radio code, which works fine, but now when I try and fire up the sat nav it come up installationfahl (which i assume means installation failed) Renault don’t have a clue what is wrong – can anyone here help. Many thanks. Darren
Oh, and I’ve also got the problem of the drivers door not locking, even though all the others lock fine. Again, I’ve seen the problem complained of above, but couldn’t see what the solution was. Thanks all. Darren
HI RICK,I AM ALL SET TO BUY AN 02PLATE 2.0-IDE LAGUNA ESTATE TOURER WITH 90K ON THE CLOCK ,IMMACULATE COND,FAB CAR , FAB SPEC AND FAB TO DRIVE. IT HAS TWO KEY CARDS, ALTHOUGH ONLY 1 IS KEY CUT( IS THIS A PROBLEM). THE OWNERS HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL IN LAST TWO YEARS,APART FROM A REPLACEMENT POWER STEERING PUMP.BUT!!!!!!( A BIG BUT) AFTER READING YOUR FORUM I AM IN REAL TURMOIL AS TO BUY THE CAR OR NOT NOW????? DO I GO FOR A FANTASTIC CAR OR DO THE CONSTANT INHERANT FAULTS THAT SEEM TO PLAGUE THE CARS OVERIDE THE PURCHASE!? THEY CAN`T ALL BE BAD ! CAN THEY?
WHAT DO I DO?? K
Hi Kenco, I can’t really advise but I can make some comments. Perhaps the Laguna has had more than its fair share of problems but fundamentally it is a great car. Remember that, in general, it is only the problems that surface, the good ones you will never hear about. If you have seen the service record and things like the windows, sun-roof dashboard all seem to work ok then it looks like it is a good one.
90K is quite a high mileage for an ’02 but I expect the price reflects that.
The uncut key (I expect it is green) suggests that the owners lost a card and had to replace it. The proper cut part can be obtained from a dealer on about 2 weeks order and with proof of ownership. It is only used for emergency access.
Just found this great site and as a recent new owner of a 53 plate Laguna Sports Tourer 2.2dci it looks as if I might be needing it.
So far, nearside tyre sencer has communication issues, had it checked out and now just ignore it and check all pressurers regulary.
Main key worn out using spare, anyone found a reprogrammer geek yet?
Local Renault dealer changed 6 speed gearbox out of waranty at no cost replaced a rubber seal while box was out £1.50.
Steering column lock computer dead, replacement £300, bought a yellow wheel lock.
I had a tyre sensor problem and renault advised I pump the tyre high say 50 psi and then deflate to the correct pressure. Sorted the problem.
laguna privalage 02, 2 liter ide. Is there a workshop manual for this engine?
or has anyine got information where the fuel filter is? Some days it will not start other days no problem, any ideas why this happens?

I had sunroof problems, mine just opened on its own when driving and wouldn’t shut. The dealer made a hash of disabling it (they checked the fault diagnosed a new motor assembly at £510 Sterling and then reconnected the electrics wrongly [The plug to connect the Sunroof nmotor will fit into the roof lighting panel socket and vice versa; everyone be warned]).
If you are Mechanically / Electrically inclined (I make no assumptions based on gender!) then do as I did. Strip out the motor clean, degrease and repack with new grease. Clean the rails and the cables that transmit the drive from motor to the sunroof panel itself and refit the motor, it is a fiddly job but not too complicated and it solved my problem. I hope it solves yours. Much cheaper than the alternative.
Please do not try this unless you feel competent as, if you cannot get it back together, the car will not be secure when locked and possibly not watertight.

Its nice to see all us Laguna owners have the same problems
i had an old 96 laguna and was so impressed i updated.
mines a laguna 1.8 dynamic and yes ive got tyre pressure problems and not to mention the last owner swapped all the tyres round (still havent swapped them ) anyone now of a reset for this ?
also the other day all 4 tyres dissapeared on the screen and have slowly came back over the last few days
also the car clinks n clicks as it pulls away , ive had new bushes fitted and its been in the garage 4 times , but every time it goes in the noises stop , typical
i paid £40 ebay for a new key plus £40 to program it, not bad but i hear you can program them form inside the car
Ive still got power steerring troubles though , if i turn hard and fast whilst at low speed ,say, into a parking space , the power steering goes, its had a new valve but problem is still there ,
and i lose power when the air con is on which also squeels when i go over 3000 rpm
this car has really let me down big time
ive had locking problems, and now new today the drivers courtesy light doesnt work
some great tips on this site , havent found the key fob reprogramming yet “does this actaully work”
@JASE havent found the key fob reprogramming yet “does this actaully work”
It works with existing keys that have “lost their memory” due to a flat or removed battery (see item 1 on this post). I don’t think it works to program a fresh (or recycled) key.
hi just got 04 laguna ,full works on it but door mirrors dont fold on the switch any idea wot is the problem or wot its going to cost me
thanks chris
I would suggest checking the fuses. Mine makes a strange graunching noise sometimes and I spray PTFE stuff in the gap which helped. You problem rather depends on if anything happens at all or nothing.
Hi,
I’ve got a 01 1.8 sport tourer done 47k I’ve had from new, Had a few probs but nothing spectacular.
I need to change the rear axle bushes as on anything other than a smooth road it sounds like the shocks are going to appear in the boot, apperently the rivets on the bush are aluminium and thus fail.
Anyhow my question is has anybody replaced them, if so whats’ involved, I belive the special tool for removing/reinstating the bush makes the job simple?
Ta
Andy
Any ideas on the following. have a 01 1.8 dynamique. Intermitantly the electric fault light comes on the engine over revs and there is no throttle control. disconnect the battery for a few seconds and everything goes back to normal for a while. is this a major fault? Any ideas.
Thanks
miles
bought a laguna sports estate last year 06 only gave me one key i wasn’t aware that you are supposed to get two. anyway key has broke have to wind down drivers window get out of the car lean through the window put card in slot press lock button take card from slot close window,im now waiting for a new card. my question is this ,because locking the car the way i have described doesnt activate the alarm will my insurance pay out if it is stolen.
I have an 51 1.6 Expression. When the climate control in running (cold). The engine revs drop on tick over to 600 or below and can sometimes stall at a junction etc. Any thoughts on resolving this.
Any ideas/answers welcome
Steve, I think you just need the tick-over increasing a bit. When the A/C comes on it puts a little load on the engine (that is why your fuel consumption goes up). Normally revs dip a bit when it comes on but then recover. It looks likes yours needs a bit of adjustment. Stalling at junctions was a common problem with early ones.
Billy, I don’t think insurance requires you to have or set an alarm unless it is a specific clause (I always disable them as they annoy the neighbours). More of a problem is the lack of deadlock but generally, so long as it is locked at all and the key is not in it shouldn’t be a problem (personal opinion only).
Hello,
Could anybody tell me if the parking sensors on a Laguna estate 2.0 2002 be turned off. If so how do you do it.
Hi. I have a laguna 52 reg, and (using as a taxi). Last week, the electrics started to play up, ie when you put the front window wiper all is ok. But when you switch them off, they still are working!. Another thing is there is no illumination on the dashboard when you turn on the haedlights. Please help.
