The 2000+ Renault Laguna (the one with no keyholes) has a few quirks which are not in the owners manual (if we still had it). These are based on experience and may be mistaken but also may also apply to other cars, especially other Renault models.
- When the card key battery runs low it fails to operate the door mechanism. Changing the battery appears not to make any difference but the problem is that it has lost the code. Get into the car using the other key then use the faulty key (with a new battery) to start the car. This re-instates the code.
- If the dashboard goes haywire e.g. all lights stuck on, then it can be reset/tested by removing the card key; hold down the trip computer button on the end of the stick and while it is pressed, put the key back in. This will then reset the computer and go through a test sequence. Remove the key to stop it.
- The tyre pressure warning system is sensitive to the cold, especially sub zero temperatures. The symptoms are that all four tyres show flat and the warning light flashes. This will clear itself after about a half mile when the tyres warm up. I had it fixed once under warantee (no idea what they did) but it still does it most winters.
- A poor contact in the electric sunroof switch can cause it to open at unexpected times. The switch is expensive (c£100) so disconnect it by pulling out the plug (the switch panel just pops off). Fortunately the default position for the roof is closed.
Hi, I try start my Renault laguna but doesn’t start. Make noise like “tack, Tack”
Yellow engine lights is on.
Please help me.
Hi
Anyone had this issue with a Laguna II 1.9Dci: When accelerating gently or in slow traffic. the car appears to hesitate between 1800 and 2000 revs. I know that if the MAF sensor is disconnected the problem goes away. I have had the EGR valve cleaned and the MAF sensor functin appears to be ok.
Any ideas what else could be wrong?
I would like to recommend Masters of Beckenham and Masters of Shirley – excellent service. I had a problem with the car not starting and they took it in straight away and fixed it (TDC sensor was faulty) under warranty the same day. The car is a Laguna II automatic (2005 Dynamique).
Hi
I have Dynamique, 1.8 Petrol (2001) which has had all manner of problems but to be fair I’ve done over 100,000 miles and I do love it. A new problem has just started though, I put the car into 5th and it jumps out again when I let the clutch back in. I’m thinking this could be expensive but I’m not going to the dealership as they’re a waste of space. Has anyone come across this and been given a satisfactory fix?
Took car to dealer yesterday, and they have cleaned the EGR valve only £176 inc VAT, but he car now runs very well…
I wonder what you are talking about, Nick.
Can any one help as i have a big problem with my 2.0ide 2001.I get complete loss of power
and the engine drops down to tick over with all the warning lights on the dash board on
when i press the gas pedal the revs will not rise it just keeps it at tick over i think its a fail safe system to prevent damage to the engine and the tick over is now lumpy.
It has gone back to the dealer in MK for the second time but they said the fact i turned the ignition off that has cleared the fault codes i know that is bull. This problem is dangerous as the engine died at 60mph with my 6 month baby in the car and lorrys fast approaching…help
Hi, PLEASE HELP i have a laguna 2 “51” plate 85km 1.9dci.
When driving the “yellow diesel plug symbol light” comes on and when it does i notice the turbo seems to not work..
Very sluggish acceleration any ideas please.
i just spent £500 on a fuel pressure sensor and a new keycard i dont know how much more i can take.
[email address removed] PLEASE THANX
I have an 02 1.6 Expression. Runs well – fingers crossed except when the climate control in running (cold). The engine revs drop on tick over to 600 or below and can sometimes stall at a junction etc. Any thoughts on resolving this.
Hi All,
I think I should point out that I am no mechanic, I know little about cars and nothing at all about engines. If you can resolve your problems between yourselves then I am happy to leave this dialogue going but don’t expect any serious input from me.
What an absolute goldmine of information. Just purchased a 01 plate 1.9 dCi Dynamique estate for the ‘female boss’, what a stunning car, this site has helped me get rid of the ‘spanner’ and reprogramme my offside front window. I hope I can return the favours soon. regards
XENON HEADLAMP REPLACEMENT here’s a mad idea, is it possible to replace the xenon headlights on my 01 plata 1.9 dCi with the standard halogen type ? I find the beam pattern scattered and disappointing, and the cost of doing anything with the xenon lamps is crazy. All suggestions greatly appreciated
Hi Joe, I am only guessing but I think it would be very expensive if you could do it at all. The whole lens and housing would have to be replaced as they work in a totally different way.
Thanks Rick. I appreciate the cost factor, but I can get a pair of new (spurious), headlamps for about £200 and with a pair of ‘upgrade’ bulbs I’m sure I’ll have an acceptable setup. Will keep you posted.
Just bought an ’01 laguna v6 tourer with 50k miles seems to drive very well (so far) only problem i’ve found as of yet it electric windows only go down a couple of inches at a time, any ideas? oh and i need to replace a broken tyre valve which is costing me £97 for the pleasure from renault. Hope i dont have any other major problems but i’m not too optimistic after reading this site! Also any info on renault specialists in the NW area (Liverpool, Wirral, Chester etc) would be appreciated so i can avoid the dealer as much as poss, thanks.
Hi Adam. The problem of the electric window is documented on this site, I’ve ‘cut and pasted’ the one that worked for me

Hi Murchin. After you reconnect the battery you have to reprogramme the windows individually. Lower each window in turn right to the bottom and then keep the switch depressed for about five seconds so the computer can “relearn” the fully open position. Then fully close each window and hold the relevant switch in the up position for about five seconds so the computer can “relearn” the closed position. Hey presto-your one touch window switches should then work again.
If you are prepared to forego the low tyre pressure warning system ( because it seems to be ‘consistently inconsistent’) you can use the regular tyre valve that costs only a couple of quid.
Hi I have recently purchased a 1.9dci privilege it turns out to have a few problems tho,
1. Card key does not lock micro switch has come off circuit board, bought the car with receipt for new key and coding took the car to the dealer and 45mins later they come to me and say sorrywe cant code your key, the system is telling us theres a fault with the card reader. its going to cost lots more to find out the fault. would a second hand card reader be any good or are they programed to the car awswell????
2. Heater/climate control is completely off after it decided to go haywire and blowing full then off at its own will. now i have now control display and no heating or climate control. Can this be fixed or do i need a seconed hand unit???
3. when driving car pulls to left when going round left hand bends mainly on dual carriageways, and i get a engine hesitance around the 2000 rpm mark.
4. interior lights stay on when the doors are opened when the car is running and take about 20-30 mins to go off when driving, it is fine when people are in the car before strting.
if there are any more problems that i can think off i will post them on here,
CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE I REFUSE TO PAY RENAULT PRICES THEY ARE CON ARTISTS
i have a renault laguna 2001 plate and the speedo has stopped working. does this happen often and is there a cheap fix solution, rather than changing the whole dash??
Keycard(s) went on my 1,9 Initiale diesel so I could open & start, but not lock the car. My dealer’s solution (and who wanted to charge me £20 for the privilege until I reminded him that I’d just parted with £130 for a new card !) was to open the rear passenger door, reach between the seats & press the lock button. It works OK but your alarm isn’t activated, and only works from the rear passenger doors. But at least in the short term I can secure the car til Renault get off their butts & send me a new key……
Hi,
We’ve had our Laguna since 2001. The sun roof jammed open, the only way to close it was by using an allen key. It’s now shut, but can’t open it. Nothing else seems to have stopped working so don’t think it’s a fuse – any ideas. Also think the driver’s side door sensor has broken, now I have to put the card in, take it out and put it in again, before the internal lights turn off. If a passenger gets in whilst the engine is running the lights go on and stay on. Have to stop the engine take the card out and put it in, to turn them off. Any ideas how much a new door sensor will set me back.
Tried to rest software by disconnecting battery. Now can’t re-enter radio code. Does anyone know the default (we didn’t change it.) Also how do I enter it?
