The 2000+ Renault Laguna (the one with no keyholes) has a few quirks which are not in the owners manual (if we still had it). These are based on experience and may be mistaken but also may also apply to other cars, especially other Renault models.
- When the card key battery runs low it fails to operate the door mechanism. Changing the battery appears not to make any difference but the problem is that it has lost the code. Get into the car using the other key then use the faulty key (with a new battery) to start the car. This re-instates the code.
- If the dashboard goes haywire e.g. all lights stuck on, then it can be reset/tested by removing the card key; hold down the trip computer button on the end of the stick and while it is pressed, put the key back in. This will then reset the computer and go through a test sequence. Remove the key to stop it.
- The tyre pressure warning system is sensitive to the cold, especially sub zero temperatures. The symptoms are that all four tyres show flat and the warning light flashes. This will clear itself after about a half mile when the tyres warm up. I had it fixed once under warantee (no idea what they did) but it still does it most winters.
- A poor contact in the electric sunroof switch can cause it to open at unexpected times. The switch is expensive (c£100) so disconnect it by pulling out the plug (the switch panel just pops off). Fortunately the default position for the roof is closed.
My 03 Laguna 1.8 Expression loses radio reception sometimes. I checked connections to the rear screen heater to no effect. Bu I have found when the problem occurs it can be rectified by switching the heater on and then off.
The car has a frustrating hesitancy at times when pulling away and on pickup between the gears between first and second. It is not plugs or coils. Has anyone any ideas?
HELP!!!

Funny one John!
No Ryck, but I would suggest you take it straight back to the garage – it is their problem. I also think it is illegal as you now have no reference odometer reading for things like the MOT.
On a similar note, does anyone know how to stop the “service spanner” flashing on the odometer. I have had it serviced by an independent and they didn’t know how to reset it. They thought there was a button somewhere (and there may be one for Ryck’s problem as well) but didn’t know where.
Problems with my 2000/W Laguna hatchback central locking. Pressing internal switch or remote key button to lock the doors results in it locking and immediately re-opening. Indicator lights no longer flash when locking, and the courtesy light is permanently on which sort of leads me to believe there may be a problem with one of the door sensors. Relay happily clicks and as remote is accepted I presume this means the sensor unit and control unit could be ok. Any handy tips for fault finding without having to rip all door panels off to access the locks???? The rear doors lock fine manually with the internal buttons and the driver’s door works fine with the key.
Help…
Hi i have a renault laguna dci and my drivers side window will not work i can hear the electrics tryin to work but nothing happens!! I have tried to take the panel off but i can only find one screw under the drivers side handle. Any ideas how to fix it? Or at least get the panel off!! Dont really wanna take it the garage unless i have to
Ta
To the last reply on how to turn the service spanner off. You scroll to the mileage countdown using the button on the end of the stick. Then press the reset button once and then hold it down until it resets to 18,000. Need to hold it for around ten seconds.
[Rick adds: Thanks Andy, I have now posted a separate item about this. 2-Apr-2007]
Hi I have a laguna 1.8 supersport (01).I thought it was a great car til this past fortnight when all hell seems to have broke loose.Firstly the front passenger window wouldn’t go up fully and I had to take it to a Renault garage and pay 387 euros to fix it.Then 6 days later the immobiliser kicked in and renault told me I had to get new keycard that would take between 5-10 working days as it comes from france, then after 6 days the phoned to say it’s ready,247 euro includ VAT.They also managed to get one of the old keys coded (wow). Then they asked if i had any problems with the odometer readings as they now don’t work.I told them in polite fashion that they worked when the car went to the garage. They suggested new clocks.(I politely told them where to put them). Now the car is still in the garage and they have to fix it.My conclusion is that the renault mechanics are chancers as I have proof of this from before.I’t all seems like computer gliches and they’re too complicated for even their own staff to understand but not at our expense.I’m at my wits end with this garage and I need some advice urgently.
Thanks in advance.
I lost one of my keys (flat thing) to my Laguna which has just ended its warranty (3 years old). The other key is now playing up and I have a hard time opening the door, but not locking it. I don’t have another key so I am leaving the car unlocked when it is in my parking place at work, but I don’t want to do that on the street. What shall I do?
You can lock it with the metal bar on the passengers side. The bar is inside the keycard if you take it out by the top.The metal bar should have grooves on it for locking the door on the passenger side.If it dose’nt have grooves you will probably have to replace the keycard or get grooves from any keymaster if you give the chassis no.

Radio aerial. I can’t find details of the Renault configuration but looking at other manufacturers the situation could be as follows.
The aerial is either the rear screen heater element itself (most likely) or a set of wires in a similar place dedicated to the aerial. Check that it is undamaged, both the metal lines and the insulating lacquer. Repair kits are available but I don’t know how good they are. Also check the connections to it for corrosion etc.
There is probably an adapter/driver box nearby, either in the roof lining or the rear quarters. This will be to split the power for the heater from the aerial with an RF capacitor (choke) so that you don’t pump 12V DC back into the radio. There will also be an inductor (coil) to match the frequencies for reception, filter noise and isolate the other end of the aerial from earth. There may also be a wide band RF amplifier in there to improve the signal over the long cable run. It would be worth finding this box and checking that the connections are sound – the loss of an earth connection to this box could well cause the symptoms that you describe, switching on the heater could create an alternate earth path for the amplifier power. Unfortunately, if you find it, it could be a sealed box.
Also check the coax lead from the back of the radio all the way back. Any damage here, especially at either end, can cause strange problems.
These aerial types are notorious for very poor AM reception, they are optimised for FM.
Hi Murchin. After you reconnect the battery you have to reprogramme the windows individually. Lower each window in turn right to the bottom and then keep the switch depressed for about five seconds so the computer can “relearn” the fully open position. Then fully close each window and hold the relevant switch in the up position for about five seconds so the computer can “relearn” the closed position. Hey presto-your one touch window switches should then work again.
Hi, my 51 estate went in for a broken front spring, went to collect three days later car wouldn’t start, garaged blamed battery, so jump started it so i could go get a battery myself. Just left garage tried to put window down, only went down 2″ each press , straight back to garage keeped in another day.
Got car back windows working ok, told the car had to be put on computer to reprogram “comfort setting”, two days later car battery went flat, jump started it to get to work and again windows not working correctly, got new battery fitted next day and after short drive windows started working properly by themself.
Hello,
I have bought a 2001 Renault Laguna Station Privilege (120,000km). So far I have not seen any problems at all.
I want to replace the original Renault radio by a brand model (Sony, Kenwood, etcc.) but wondering if the radio controls behind the wheel will still work.
Thanks for the feedback
where is the stick (see below)

I have a Renault Laguna 1.9 dci and the driver door will not lock. Every time I pressed the lock on the key, all the doors are locked but the driver’s door. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help
put your key in the slot whilst pressing the trip computer button. All lights flash. Then use the CD up down on the remote handle until the trip computers flashes and then press the button on the end of the knob to reset
02 ide switches to limp home mode when on tick-over. Stopping the engine and restarting resets it and all is fine until the revs drop to c.850rpm again. If I keep the revs above 950 it doesn’t happen. Any ideas?
Hi Chris, thanks for the hint about window re-programming.
baz, the stick referred to is the trip computer one on the RHS. I have made a separate post about this which may be clearer.
Simon, that sounds like an interesting trick but I am not sure what problem you are fixing or what you mean by the CD up/down?
